2 Corinthians 5:21

"God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Happy Faithful Friday! Today’s verse is a reminder that our salvation was not free, we just didn't have to pay for it.

Too often, we focus solely on the gift of salvation without humbling ourselves enough to remember our inability to be perfect. Our sin is two-fold:

1. We are unrighteous before a Holy God

2. Our sin has a penalty and that penalty is death

As believers, we need to be overwhelmed by the penalty in order to be truly overwhelmed by the grace of God. When we look at the depth of our sin, it opens our eyes and hearts to the depth of His grace. It is easy to treat grace cheaply if we forget what we have been saved from.

Jesus took on our sin so that when we come to God and admit, "I am guilty of sinning before a Holy God," we can instead stand in righteousness with Him. It is time to reflect on the truth that our standing with God is nothing we earned; it has everything to do with what the blameless Son did on the cross so that we might receive righteousness through Him.

Our sin doesn't need to be something we sit in guilt about, nor should we let shame paralyze us from moving forward. However, it is important to understand that because of our sin, there was a consequence: death. What is done is done. Do not sit in captivity to those sins; instead, sit in humility, using your redemption as leverage to declare that our Father in Heaven is worthy of it all.
